Jozef Horváth - violin

Concertmaster of the Slovak Philharmonic, first violinist (primarius) of the Moyzes Quartet, and violin pedagogue.
He was born in Bratislava, where he completed his studies at the State Conservatory and at the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) in the violin classes of A. Vrtel and J. Kopelman. He continued his studies abroad at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna, under G. Pichler, first violinist of the world-renowned Alban Berg Quartet. In the USA, he completed a two-year Artist Certificate soloist diploma at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, in the class of the distinguished American pedagogue Eduard Schmieder.
During his studies in Slovakia, he was awarded scholarships granted by masterclasses that significantly shaped his further artistic development (E. Gratch, I. Bezrodny, V. Liberman, M. Frischenschlager, M. Minchev, G. Pauk, N. Grumlíková, and others).
From 2003 to 2011, he served as Principal First Violin and Concertmaster of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga in Spain. During this period, he founded the Cuarteto Alborán, with which he regularly performed on concert stages throughout Spain, while also beginning to devote himself actively to pedagogical work.
In 2011, he returned to Slovakia. His full-time doctoral studies enabled him to dedicate his life further to teaching at the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) as well as at the Conservatory in Bratislava. He continues to teach at both institutions, and his students have received significant awards at violin competitions, won auditions for Slovak and international orchestras, and pursued studies at prestigious universities abroad. He regularly collaborates artistically with youth orchestras in Slovakia.
His professional life in Slovakia has been significantly marked by two major achievements. Following a competitive audition, he became Concertmaster of the Slovak Philharmonic, a position he has held since 2014. A year later, he succeeded S. Mucha, a founding member, as first violinist (primarius) of the Moyzes Quartet. Since his joining the ensemble, the Moyzes Quartet has recorded its fourth CD. The quartet plays an important role in artistic life both in Slovakia and abroad. In 2025, they will celebrate a significant milestone — the 50th anniversary of their founding.
Jozef Horváth has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, artistic director, and concertmaster on major stages around the world across nearly all continents.
He plays a violin made in 2018 by the contemporary Italian luthier Andrea Ortona, purchased by the Slovak Philharmonic.
